Very few people realize how
funky, danceable and especially how limitless original Bollywood actually
is. With the release of the first two volumes of the compilation series THE BOMBAY CONNECTION the doors of Bollywood’s treasure chambers
are opened widely for the first time. And what first emerges is the
spectacular Bollywood funk of the 1970s and the infectious, bouncing Night
club music of the 1960s. Sounds so exciting that we at BOMBAY CONNECTION
believe that everybody should hear them, and a good reason to organize a
tour visiting several Dutch stages to present Bollywood’s most exciting
sounds and visuals, kicking off the 20th of October in Paradiso,
Amsterdam. This live music performance will create a new soundtrack to the
1979 cult film GUNMASTER G-9, a
funky Indian film soaked with karate fights, motorbike chases and undersea
headquarters. Hilarious are the ultra cheap special effects like card
buildings, toy cars on toy parachutes, a label machine a laser gun.
Altogether a genuine Indian ED WOOD, but then with bell-bottom trousers,
sideburns, Desi Bond girls and an insanely funky soundtrack.
Bollywood’s boundless
originality inspired the composer/arranger GERRY
ARLING (of the duo ARLING &
CAMERON) to stage a live performance of these sounds. The band will
consist of the turntablist Kypski,
Tammo Heikens - Sitar, Sathyam Sheoratan – Tablas, Jan
Klug - fluit, sax & weird noises, Hans Kaldeway - keyboards
& loops, Harry Arling -
drums, Gerry Arling - guitar & bass. They will be re-creating
the music of Bollywood composer R.D. Burman and the legendary sounds of
the sitar psych music of ANANDA SHANKAR.
The modern dancer and
choreographer SUJATA GOEL will
perform the piece DISCO DANCER, a choreography made after a dance in the
similar titled Bollywood movie from 1982.
Sujata Goel (India/USA) was educated in South India in the Carnatic
dance tradition, and danced in the modern dance troupe of PADMINI CHETTUR.
Recently she received additional dance training at the contemporary dance
school of de KEERSMAEKER’s P.A.R.T.S. She will perform the piece with
the dancer TAREK HALABY (Palestine/USA).
The
evening closes with a DJ set: the compiler of the CD series and fervent
Bollywood music collector EDO
BOUMAN and fellow collector DJ
JOHANZ will DJ the best, funkiest and craziest tunes from their
collections, accompanied by the most colorful and outrageous Bollywood
film clips.
The
Bombay Connection evening has been selected in the cross-over SPECIAL-FX
program, and will be touring Holland in Januari 2007.
